One of my New Year's resolutions is to provide information on the Hawaiian language on my blog.  So, starting today and every Thursday hereafter I will present either a word or phrase with the English and Hawaiian translation.

I thought the perfect phrase to start 2009 is:

 Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!

Definitions are from the Hawaiian Dictionary by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert.

Hau'oli  - happy, glad, gay, joyful

Makahiki - year, age, annual

Hou - new, fresh, recent

Best wishes to all for a very Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!!
