Kauai Dog Path Opens!
Thanks to the Kauai Humane Society and many individuals who crusaded for our four legged friends, the dog path on the east side of the island finally opened! Starting December 1st, dogs can now accompany their companions on the path previously reserved for bikes and walkers/joggers. Allowing dogs on the path is under a 18 month trial period from now until July 1, 2010 and there are specific rules that users must adhere to.
RULES FOR DOGS ON THE PATH
* Dogs are allowed on the path ONLY between Lihi Boat Ramp and the southernmost rest pavilion at Kealia Beach
* Handler must be in control of dog at all times with a maximum leash length of 6 feet. (Retractable leashes are NOT allowed on the path.)
* Handler must ALWAYS have poop bag visible (tie several to your leash) while walking your dog
* Handler must promptly remove & dispose of dog's feces.
* Dogs must be currently licensed (new licenses available Jan. 1, 2009 at Kauai Humane Society - good for 2 year period or until Jan. 1, 2011)
* Handler must remove dog from the path IMMEDIATELY if acts aggressive.
Any violation of the above is subject to a minimum fine of $100.
Please call Kauai Humane Society at 632-0610 if you have questions or to report concerns.

Aussie, my Australian Shepherd at Kealia Lookout Point. The blue plastic bone hanging off his collar contains his "poopie bags" so we can comply with the rules.
